“By wisdom the LORD founded the earth; by understanding he created the heavens.” Proverbs 3:19 (NLT)
Many Christians are afraid of “science.” Many “scientist” are condescending towards religion. The resulting clash is usually not pretty. This view of “science” vs “religion” is not only unhealthy, but also historically inaccurate. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that people even thought like that. John William Draper and Andrew Dickson White are the two men who essentially “started” the war. The truth is that religion has always held that God created the world according to “wisdom”, meaning that the world operates in ways that are discoverable and makes sense. But whereas “scientist” want to stop at that point, people of faith are willing to go further to affirm that it took “someone” to make it all happen.
One of the ways that Jesus told us to love God is with “all our mind.” We are not to dispense with any kind of critical thinking when we become a Christian. Instead, we are to think all the way through. Paul points to creation as the picture showing us “God’s invisible power.” We know by what has been created that there is a creator. That is using our reason to support our faith.
ONETHING: Love God…with all my mind.
The Habit of Knowledge calls for us to sift our experiences for truth. Not everything we “know” is “true.” We can be sincerely wrong. Our quest for knowledge must be an intentional search for the truth. Faith and reason work together to allow us to discover the truth of our creation and its Creator.
PlusONE: Know God.
